Improving strength and surface properties

Valmet’s sizer product family offers all application methods and all paper machine sizes available - spray, film and pond application and a new types of a sizer with hard nip rolls and curtain sizing. All sizers have a robust and modular construction combined with high functionality and quality with a low total cost of ownership. In surface sizing or size application, starch, or other types of size or pigmented size, is applied to the paper web surface to improve its strength, surface properties or water resistance. Sizing is often used to modify surface properties before coating.

OptiSizer Film sizing

OptiSizer Film offers a functional and innovative design, based on know-how and long experience. Its simple and reliable design results in easy operation, installation and fast initial start-up.

OptiSizer Hard sizing

OptiSizer Hard is uses higher nip loads to improve sheet strength properties by taking advantage of better starch penetration and decreasing fiber to fiber distance.

OptiSizer Curtain sizing

The new surface sizing method applies the starch as a curtain of size. When combined with hard-covered rolls the results with coated cartonboards are significant: stiffness, quality and production increased, and energy and raw material consumption reduced.

OptiSizer Spray sizing

In surface sizing, the size is sprayed on nip rolls through a row of spraying nozzles. Then, the size is transferred to the web in the nip. You can control the amount of size accurately and fast, and there are no consumables due to contactless application, which leads into decreased downtime.

OptiSizer Combi sizing

OptiSizer Combi combines different size application methods in one process to benefits of both technologies when paper top and bottom sides have completely different needs.

OptiSizer Pond sizing

Pond size application technology is primarily designed for specialty paper grades, heavy printing papers, and for board when through-sizing is needed.

IntelliSizer

The IntelliSizer improves paper properties such as strength and printing qualities by adding chemical substances to the paper web. The IntelliSizer family consists of three Size Press types: Pond, Metering, and Hybrid. The IntelliSizer is equipped with a carbon fiber application head. The Metering Size Press reduces or eliminates pond turbulence, poor pickup control, low solids concentration, sheet edge problems, higher after drying demand, uneven reel profiles, and additional sheet breaks. Innovation in Järvenpää Paper Technology Center: Hard nip sizing with curtain application

The most recent innovation in surface sizing, hard nip sizing with curtain application, was developed and tested in Valmet’s Paper Technology Center in Järvenpää. The results from the pilot machine have been exciting: the sizer can successfully run up to 1700 m/min.

MM Količevo BM 3: Investing for the future with OptiSizer Curtain

In October 2023 MM Board & Paper's rebuilt BM 3 board machine and the first-ever hard nip sizer with a curtain application were successfully started up at the MM Količevo mill in Slovenia. Prior to the rebuild, board machine BM 3 did not have a sizer. A prototype technology in sizing was chosen because it was the only technology flexible enough to fulfill all requirements of the product portfolio.
