Valmet to deliver MAP Q online measurement system for Rygene-Smith & Thommesen A/S in Norway

Valmet is to supply its Fiber Furnish Analyzer (Valmet MAP Q) advanced online measurement system to Rygene-Smith & Thommesen, a producer of high-quality TMP and CTMP at its mill in Rygene, located on Norway’s south coast. This order marks the first delivery of Valmet MAP Q to Norway. The main objective of this investment is to enhance quality and cost efficiency at the mill.

The order, whose value will not be disclosed, was received in the third quarter of 2024 and delivery is scheduled for January 2025. 

“Our old analyzer is ready for replacement. After researching several alternative replacements, our choice fell on Valmet MAP Q. We are concerned with product quality for our customers. We tailor make fiber quality and have a wide range of grades. It is important that the transition to a new grade happens quickly and accurately. Our plan is to use fiber properties and operating parameters to model product quality,” says Elisabeth Lunden Berli, COO/ Mill Manager, Rygene-Smith & Thommesen.

“The Valmet MAP Q system will enable Rygene-Smith & Thommesen to enhance product quality and improve the cost efficiency of their pulp-making process. The system will include in-line automatic samplers, fiber imaging technology and Freeness measurement as well as advanced software for process research.” says Peter Hallberg, Sales Manager, Automation, Valmet.

 

Delivery's technical information

Valmet will deliver the Valmet Fiber Furnish Analyzer (Valmet MAP Q) to replace the mill’s current analyzer. Valmet MAP Q is an advanced online quality measurement system designed for paper, pulp, board, and tissue applications.

Valmet MAP Q enables enhanced quality control through precise measurements of fiber and furnish properties. With continuous real-time monitoring of pulp quality, customers can identify issues early and maintain consistent product quality. Valmet MAP Q also optimizes the blending of different fiber types to improve overall furnish quality and resource efficiency. The modular system can be easily scaled and customized according to customer needs.

The system will include freeness measurement capability and a measurement module for fiber properties including a soft modelling tool.

 

About the customer

Rygene-Smith & Thommesen produces high-quality TMP and CTMP at its mill in Rygene, southern Norway. The pulp is manufactured from fresh timber harvested from responsibly managed forests. The mill at Rygene, established in 1883, was one of the first of its kind in Norway. The thermomechanical production process provides a high level of flexibility in terms of tailoring pulp according to customer requirements. The majority of the pulp from the Rygene mill is exported to Germany, Italy, Spain and Austria.
