Valmet to deliver critical valve solutions to Hycamite’s new hydrogen production plant in Finland

Jun 19, 2024

Valmet will deliver critical valve solutions to Hycamite’s new Customer Sample Facility (CSF) in Kokkola, Finland. The new facility is expected to start operations during the second half of 2024.

“Producing hydrogen through methane splitting requires valves that operate reliably and safely at high temperatures. Additionally, we wanted a partner for the project who has the right expertise and the capability to support the scalability of production. The availability of services close to the facility is also important to us, “says Ville Klaavu, VP, Business Development, Scale-up at Hycamite.

The Customer Sample Facility (CSF) by Hycamite is Europe’s largest methane splitting hydrogen production plant. It produces hydrogen by breaking down methane molecules from natural gas and biogas into their elemental forms of hydrogen and carbon, all without greenhouse gas emissions. The purpose of the facility is to demonstrate the efficiency of the new pyrolysis technology in producing clean hydrogen and high-quality solid carbon on an industrial scale. The clean hydrogen produced in the facility can be used as an industrial raw material or fuel, while the carbon products are suitable for applications such as battery materials.

“Demand for clean hydrogen is increasing and industry pioneers such as Hycamite play a crucial role in scaling up new technologies into commercial use. We are honored to be part of this exciting project. We are building upon our long experience in dealing with hydrogen and methane applications to further develop reliable and efficient flow control technologies for our customers in the industry,” says Ville Kähkönen, Head of Renewable Energy and Gases at Valmet’s Flow Control business line.

About Hycamite

Hycamite produces clean hydrogen and industrial-quality solid carbon by splitting methane using proprietary zero-emission technology. It is based on the thermo-catalytic decomposition (TCD) of methane molecules. In other words, we break the methane with our catalyst and heat. Hycamite’s novel methane pyrolysis technology requires only 13% of the energy needed to produce hydrogen by electrolysis. As a cutting-edge carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology, Hycamite’s solution enables the creation of carbon sinks, providing clients with industrial-quality carbon fit for demanding applications, such as Li-ion batteries, composite materials and filter purifiers.
