UPM-Kymmene Jamsankoski, Finland: A World-Record Roll by WinRoll winder

A record-size roll was wound at UPM-Kymmene, Jämsänkoski, Finland by a Valmet WinRoll multistation winder on June 6th, 2000. The huge roll was 4.4 meters in width, 1.5 meters in diameter and weighed 10,000 kg.
The giant roll was produced for test purposes; in the future, printing presses will be able to handle larger and larger rolls requiring both excellent roll structure and runnability. The record roll was then carefully studied and the roll structure noted to be very good.
The roll was wound by the same fully automated WinRoll winder that set a world speed record running 3000 m/min (180 km/h) for several sets in March this year. The WinRoll with a trim width of 8500 mm handles the entire production from PM 5 which produces SC rotogravure papers 45-56 g/m² at an annual capacity of 250,000 tons.
The WinRoll winder represents the latest technology in multistation winding. The patented WinRoll winding process is based on multi-purpose rider rolls and surface-traction (Winding Force), which is the most efficient tool for controlling roll hardness from the core to the maximum diameter.
