Klabin Papéis S.A., Monte Alegre, Brazil, has chosen Metso Paper to modernize its effluent treatment plant. Metso Paper will also supply COPAPA - Companhia Paduana de Papéis, Santo Antônio de Pádua, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a water treatment system including OptiDaf microflotation. These contracts significantly strengthen Metso Paper’s position in water management systems in South America.
Klabin Papéis S.A. is the largest board and paper supplier in Brazil. The Monte Alegre mill is located in the city of Telêmaco Borba, Paraná State, in southeastern Brazil. The mill’s production capacity is 610,000 tons per year of paper and board for packaging.
The Monte Alegre mill started up a biological treatment plant in the beginning of 1970s. Prompted by new environmental regulations the plant’s efficiency was first increased in the beginning of the 1990s. By increasing the effectiveness of the system, the mill will now raise the reliability of the treatment plant and ensure compliance with the concession conditions in the future.
The activated sludge plant will be modernized with a complete effluent treatment system, which includes two FlooBed bioreactors and an automation system. After modernization the plant’s capacity will be 70,000 m3 of water per day. The modernization will utilize the existing equipment to a large extent. Similar effluent treatment plants supplied by Metso Paper in Europe played an important role in the supplier selection. The modernized plant is scheduled for start-up at the end of 2004.
COPAPA - Companhia Paduana de Papéis, in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil, operates three tissue paper machines with a total production of approximately 120 tons per day. COPAPA has placed an order for an OptiDaf microflotation unit. The reject water of a gap-washer is purified with an OptiDaf unit and the sludge is fed to an OptiScreen FS-25 screen for fiber recovery. Water and fibers are recycled to the mill.
