Our purpose-driven approach to AI: Beyond a buzzword

Green leaves illustrating "AI with purpose"

At Valmet, AI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s technology we use when it genuinely adds value. Instead of asking, “How can we use AI?” we ask “What problem are we solving?” If AI is the right technology for the job, we apply it in ways that truly make a difference.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an essential part of manufacturing, helping companies improve industrial processes, product quality, and decision-making. It can further accelerate moving towards more autonomous operations. Analytical AI and machine learning are established technologies focusing on data processing and real-time analysis for tasks like process optimization and quality control. The emerging generative AI, on the other hand, helps to create new content and insights by learning from past and present data. Both types of AI will be relevant in the future - sometimes the best results require combining their capabilities.

At Valmet, we use AI to improve our products and solutions while streamlining our operations for better service.

At Valmet, we use AI to improve our products and solutions while streamlining our operations for better service. Many of our existing technologies utilize analytical AI, from analyzers and measurements to quality management. Take Valmet IQ Web Inspection and Machine Vision, for example, where our neural-based classification detects defects before they become problems. We also use intelligent mathematical models to improve mill-wide performance. While the focus here is on mathematical optimization, these systems are powered by built-in intelligence, and we continue to develop them.

While generative AI can help solve previously impossible challenges, it’s not a catch-all solution. Our first step is always to understand the specific needs and challenges. We work closely with customers to explore and evaluate opportunities and ensure all solutions align with security standards. We also want to take a proactive role in the discussions, as the technology is advancing rapidly, and new opportunities are constantly emerging. Generative AI can, for example, help us to offer more user-friendly operating interfaces, provide timely and accurate advice, or augment datasets for improved simulations.

In summary, AI is reshaping industrial operations by enabling more automation and predictive decision-making. Adopting AI goes beyond technology—it’s about adjusting our ways of operating, skills, and competences. Humans will still play a crucial role, which will shift towards overseeing and managing operations.

We’re exploring ways to bring the latest AI capabilities to further improve our solutions. We believe these will open up opportunities to improve performance, quality, and service—helping you stay ahead in a fast-evolving tech landscape.
