Sharing insights and case stories in the conference
The event included a conference focusing on current topics in the power generation sector including different form of renewable energy and digitalization. All together the conference included over 50 sessions and almost 200 different presentations. A best paper was selected from each of the seven conference tracks to acknowledge the best of the best in the industry.
The Best Paper Award in the Renewable Energy track was awarded to the paper "HOFOR Goes Towards CO2 Neutrality by Utilizing CFB's Capabilities". The presentation was given by Lars Fenger, Project Manager at HOFOR. Co-writers of the paper were Ari Kokko, Director Technology and R&D, Energy at Valmet; Jonas Wallen, Sales Manager at Valmet; and Carsten Schneider, Project Director at HOFOR. The paper describes how the new BIO4 unit at HOFOR's Amagerværket heat and power plant in Copenhagen will produce heat and electricity from biomass. The plant has a nominal capacity on 500 MW and produces 150 MW of electricity and 400 MJ/s heat. Valmet delivers biomass-fired boiler plant and related biofuel storage and conveyor systems to the plant.
Another paper presented by Valmet was one of the three finalists for the Best Paper Award in the Modern Plant Management track and was presented with a "Highly Commended" certificate. The paper "Case Stories – Flexibility with Production Optimization and Advanced Process Control" was presented by Jyri Kaivosoja, Product Manager from Valmet's Automation business. The paper describes two case stories of Tampereen Sähkölaitos and Napapiirin Energia on how the flexibility and profitability of existing combined heat and power (CHP) production systems have been increased to meet the new demands of changing markets with modern production optimization and advanced process controls.
The paper was written by Jyri Kaivosoja, Product Manager, Automation, Valmet; Marko Ketola, Electrical Specialist, Tampereen Sähkölaitos Oy; Matti Virta, Superintendent, Napapiirin Energia ja Vesi Oy; Timo Korpela, Research Scientist, Tampere University of Technology; and Juha-Pekka Jalkanen, Director, Energy and Process Systems, North America, Automation, Valmet.
In addition, Valmet's representatives gave two other presentations at the conference:
- CFB's evolution from only coal to biomass boiler – or anything in between, presented by Ari Kokko Director Technology and R&D at Valmet Energy Business.
- Enhanced performance services by using the Industrial Internet, presented by Janne Koivuniemi, Product Manager for Plant Performance Solutions at Valmet's Automation business, co-author being Jaani Silvennoinen, Global Product Manager at Valmet's Automation business.
