A fusion of functionality and aesthetics

Modern power plants are not just about functionality; they are also designed to be visually appealing and environmentally integrated. Caima’s new biomass power plant in Constância, Portugal, exemplifies this balance. The stunning design of the power plant was awarded the Platinum Winner of the Architecture & Design Collection Awards 2024.

A landmark of sustainability and innovation

Winning this prestigious award is a significant achievement, highlighting exceptional design and innovation. The architectural goal of the new biomass plant was to create an envelope for the entire technical component, going beyond simple rain protection or noise control. The design makes function evident through form, materiality, and color in a contemporary, delicate, yet affordable and cheerful way.

Moreover, the boiler house is internally illuminated at night, further enhancing its role as the core of the energy production process. It stands as an iconic feature on the industrial site and a visually warm landmark in the vicinity.

Valmet's technology at the heart of the plant

Valmet is proud to have been part of this ambitious project. The plant is not only a beautiful architectural building but also equipped with advanced technology inside. The bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler, burner system, bag house filter, automation, and Industrial Internet solutions, all delivered by Valmet, also represent innovative design and advanced technology. These technologies enhance operational efficiency and sustainability, offering high reliability, efficient combustion, and low maintenance costs, just to name a few.

Caima's commitment to sustainability

Caima, part of the Altri Group, produces cellulosic fibers for the textile industry. Their investment in a new biomass boiler has made them the first Iberian, and one of the first cellulosic fiber producers in Europe, to operate without the use of fossil fuels.

The energy produced in the biomass plant from forest residues meets all the thermal energy needs of the factory located in Constância, particularly for new innovation projects. This also makes it possible to produce value-added specialties and increases the electricity production capacity, allowing more green energy to be injected into the grid.

An award-winning achievement

This achievement not only marks a milestone in sustainable energy production but also sets a benchmark for future projects in the industry. Congratulations to this unique biomass plant and to this award-winning achievement.
