From Tech Curiosity to Coding

Tiago Gadonski Cordeiro started in Valmet’s Internship Program in Brazil in January 2024.   

How did you end up studying software engineering?

"As a child, I was always curious about how things work, especially computers and software, which led me to explore coding and software development on my own.

Before deciding to focus fully on software development, I also studied advertising for a while. This experience helped me understand creativity, communication, and the importance of user experience—skills that have been very useful in my career as a developer. However, my true passion was always in technology, which is why I eventually returned to programming. I am fluent in Portuguese, proficient in English, and have knowledge of both French and Spanish, which helps me communicate in different environments.

Besides my academic and professional work, I am also a content creator. I run a YouTube channel where I share tutorials, insights, and practical tips on .NET development and other programming topics. This platform allows me to combine my technical knowledge with the communication skills I learned in advertising, creating content that is both helpful and easy to understand."

How did you end up as an intern at Valmet in Brazil?

"I first heard about Valmet’s Internship Program through an email from an internship placement company. I was interested in learning more, so I read more about the company. The more I read, the more I felt that Valmet was a place where I could grow both personally and professionally. The opportunity seemed like a good fit for my career goals, so I decided to apply."

How long have you been working as an intern? What are your daily tasks like?

"I began my internship at Valmet in January 2024, making this my second experience as an intern. From the start, I’ve been part of a supportive environment that has helped me grow and learn a lot about working in a large, multinational company. This experience has given me a better understanding of how different teams and departments collaborate to achieve common goals.

In my role as an intern, I am involved in several key tasks. One of my primary responsibilities is developing new applications using .NET and C# that assist various departments within the company. Additionally, I provide support to users, helping them resolve any issues they encounter with our systems. I’m also responsible for routing service requests to the appropriate teams and handling tickets to ensure that problems are addressed promptly and efficiently."

What have you learned during your internship journey?

"At Valmet, I’ve been able to enhance my technical skills in .NET and C# and develop my soft skills through structured training sessions. These sessions have focused on key areas like presentation skills, project management, teamwork, and effective communication.

Valmet places a strong emphasis on the development of both technical and interpersonal skills, recognizing the importance of a well-rounded skill set. Through these trainings, I've gained better strategies for project management, improved my ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, and learned how to communicate complex technical ideas in a clear and accessible manner."

Who would you recommend this internship program for?

"I would recommend this internship program to anyone who has a strong interest in technology and is looking for a supportive place to grow professionally. I think it is best suited for those who are eager to learn and want to be part of a team that values innovation and continuous improvement."

"My time at Valmet has been incredibly rewarding! One of the major highlights is the opportunity to work with a diverse group of professionals. Engaging with colleagues from various backgrounds has enriched my understanding and skills, as they bring a wide range of expertise, perspectives, and experiences to our projects.
