In September 2012, Valmet (*Metso (Paper) until Dec. 31, 2013) launched a polyurethane roll cover for press rolls. Since then the PressPolar covers, used mainly for board making, have created a lot of interest. The beginning has been especially positive in China, where twelve PressPolar roll covers have already been sold.

“As we know, China’s huge industry needs various packing materials and therefore there are several board making machines suitable for this particular product,” explains Juha Ruotsi, Valmet’s Global Technology Manager, Roll Covers. The PressPolar cover is especially suitable for LNP-rolls, which are commonly used in machines producing containerboards made mostly out of recycled fiber.

Energy savings and dewatering efficiency create global interest

The product manager for PressPolar in China, Caifu Huang, has been involved in all of the twelve cases. He considers energy savings and dewatering efficiency as the key factors behind the success. The PressPolar roll cover is designed to reduce the energy consumption of roll drives in the press section, which has proven to be the case among Valmet's customers. Energy savings are achieved mainly because the PressPolar cover reduces rolling resistance and can be used without internal water cooling.

Chengzhong Dong, who works as a mill sales manager in China, believes that PressPolar will continue to be successful globally. He thinks that energy savings, long life-time, and existing references in China and other areas are highly appreciated by customers worldwide.
