Optimizing grid performance with advanced automation solutions

Valmet’s automation solutions for the synchronous condenser enables precise and efficient control of the machine, optimizing its operation and dynamic response based on the grid’s needs.

Valmet DNA supplies a full application package for the automation of a synchronous condenser. By integrating advanced control, protection, and information management systems, we ensure the reliable and economical operation of synchronous condensers for both greenfield and retrofit projects involving steam and gas turbine generators. Additionally, our synchronous condenser functionality is seamlessly integrated into our hydropower plant automation solution.

This is a very interesting new type of green transition project for Destia. We are happy that a Finnish company Valmet was selected as a supplier of the automation system.”

Synchronous condenser stabilizes modern power networks

A synchronous condenser is a rotating electrical machine, like an electric motor or generator, without a mechanical driver (i.e. turbine, engine etc.). These systems are used in power grid systems to store energy, as well as manage and balance power instability in the grid. It plays a crucial role in improving voltage stability, increasing short circuit capacity and grid performance without mechanical energy conversion.

By adjusting its field excitation, a synchronous condenser helps to stabilize modern power networks - especially those with a high share of renewable energy sources.
