Cameras enable continuous monthly savings in fuel in lime kiln
Jan 26, 2023
North American mill producing kraft pulp did not have a way to monitor the grate where lime is discharged besides leaving grate access door open. They purchased two Valmet boiler Diagnostics cameras to help them better monitor their operations.
“We are saving 16k-25k a month on fuel savings alone for both kilns”
Recausticizing manager over kiln operations

Customer target
Mill did not have a way to monitor the grate where lime is discharged besides leaving grate access door open.
High volume of uncontrolled ambient temperature air was being pulled in between lime bed and burner.
Burner flame tipping up, increasing wear on refractory liner.
Required ID fan to be operated at a much higher RPM rate to maintain negative draft.
Required additional fuel to heat the lime product to quality standards.
The Valmet Furnace Imaging System camera provides a view of the grate so that operations can shut the access door eliminating the ambient temperature being pulled in at that location
Decreased ID fan RPM rate
Decreased fuel usage to burner
The Valmet BDS thermal kiln camera allows for monitoring the flame shape and placement
Measured ROI with data
