VPK Group’s grade conversion in Alizay

Sep 24, 2024

VPK Group successfully converted their Alizay mill in France. Originally producing fine paper grades, the mill’s paper machine has been rebuilt to produce recycled lightweight containerboard grades. The grade conversion rebuild involved modifications and upgrades to the wet end and dryer section. Valmet also delivered a comprehensive automation package to the mill.

The grade conversion delivery included:

The full automation package included machine control systems, sectional drive control systems, quality management systems, and process control systems. Valmet also delivered a paper machine clothing package.

Results

The machine has produced containerboard with good strength properties from the very first reel. The installation of a new OptiPress Center press section removed one press from the machine. The paper machine has then achieved a dryness rate of 54 percent at the end of the press section. The wet end modifications have enabled fewer breaks and enhanced production reliability and machine speed. Runnability and ropeless tail threading systems have significantly reduced the time spent on tail threading.

All the machinery across the mill is programmed in Valmet DNA. Quality is controlled through the Valmet IQ Quality Control System and it helps VPK achieve very high-quality profiles.
