What are digital badges?
A digital badge is a validated indicator of achievement, competence, skill or participation in an activity or event. It is typically used to identify, recognize and display competence related to a specific skill, qualification, role, or task. Several badges can be combined into learning paths to support and motivate continuous competence development.
Over time, the earner can build up a portfolio of digital badges from different issuers demonstrating their skills and expertise. Badges are personal and can be carried on by an individual when changing employer or career.
All our digital badges are issued according to the industry-wide Open Badge Standard which means their credibility can be verified.
Below you will find questions often asked about Valmet Digital badges
General
1. What are digital badges?
The digital badge is an electronic and visual documentary of competence, skill, participation, or achievement. The badge can be used to identify, recognize and display acquired competence in different ways. Competence can be related to some knowledge, skill, qualification, role, or task. Badges can be used to build visualized entities and learning paths that support a person’s development.
The badge consists of an image and associated metadata, which is e.g. the name, description, criteria, and details of the issuer. The recipient of the badge may also add evidence and proofs of his/her own knowledge to the badge him/herself.
2. Why and to whom is Valmet issuing digital badges?
The purpose of Valmet badges is to encourage individuals to develop their professional skills and visualize learning progress. The badges are also aimed at presenting Valmet’s customer training offering in a new way.
Valmet digital badges are issued to individuals who have passed a course. In many cases the digital badges can serve as a replacement for paper course certificates. When a participant has completed a predefined set of courses, a so-called learning path, they can earn a meta badge which summarizes the progress along that learning journey.
3. What can I do with my digital badges?
You can use the badges to show your own skills, e.g. on LinkedIn or other social media services. With the digital badges, you can create an electronic competence profile and portfolio that can be utilized in different contexts.
4. Can I still get a printed certificate for passing a course?
Yes. When you receive a digital badge, you will also get it as pdf file which can be printed just as any other document.
5. Is there a cost for receiving a badge?
No, badge earners can download and share their Valmet badges at no extra cost.
Open Badge Passport
6. What is an Open Badge Passport?
Open Badge Passport is an online service where badge earners can easily receive, manage and share their Open Badges. The service is free for personal use. The service is available in eight different languages (English, Finnish, Spanish, French, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch and Swedish). Open Badge Passport is certified by IMS Global.
When you create a user account in Open Badge Passport, you can add any email address through which you will receive badges. This allows you to store all your badges in one place independently of where and when you have earned them.
Once you have created an account in Open Badge Passport and received the first badge there, you will automatically receive all badges issued by Valmet in the future.
For more details visit the Open Badge Passport FAQ page.
Accepting and claiming badges
7. I have passed a course. How do I get my badge?
Once you have passed the course (eLearning course, classroom course, webinar, remote course), you will be issued a badge and you will be notified by email. The link in the email will allow you to receive the badge and save it for later use.
8. How can I save my badge?
A digital badge can be received both as a pdf file to be saved on online or locally on your computer, or as a digital badge (png format). Digital badges can be stored using a badge storage service, such as Open Badge Passport.
9. How can I print my badge?
When you receive a digital badge, you will also get it as pdf file which can be printed just as any other document.
10. I did not receive an email after passing a Valmet course. How do I claim my badge
Please check your spam or junk folder to see if the email notification has been saved there. If you still do not find the message, please send us a message and we will review the situation.
Storing and accessing issued badges
11. Where are my badges stored?
Valmet digital badges are stored in a free cloud-based service, Open Badge Passport.
When you create a user account in Open Badge Passport, you can add any email address through which you will receive badges. This allows you to store all your badges in one place independently of where and when you have earned them.
12. How can I access all badges that have been issued to me?
Once you have created an account in Open Badge Passport and received the first badge there, you will automatically receive all badges issued by Valmet in the future.
If you have access to Valmet Customer Portal, your badges are displayed there in the Learning module in the “My Learning” section.
Sharing badges
13. How do I share my badges on social media?
To share badges, you have two options:
- You can share the badge immediately when you get the badge and go to the badge reception page. There are direct links to Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter and you can share the badge using those links.
- You can save the badge to Open Badge Passport and share the badge later to social media services such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.
We recommend that you save the badge to Open Badge Passport even though you immediately shared the badge on social media. In this way, the badge is stored in one place and can be used with certainty later.
Privacy
14. How is my privacy protected?
Valmet uses Open Badge Factory to create and issue digital badges. For the purpose of issuing badges, only the name and email address of the recipient of the badge are stored in the service. The badge receipt message contains a link through which the recipient of the badge can use to see any personal information stored in Open Badge Factory. You can find more information about Open Badge Factory data policies here: Privacy Notice and Data processing agreement.
The use of Open Badge Passport to access and share badges is entirely voluntary for the badge earner. Here you can find its privacy notice.
