Metso Paper has opened a new service technology center in Jiangsu Province, China. The center, which is located in Wuxi about 100 kilometres west of Shanghai, provides advanced machinery maintenance and process development services to the Chinese fiber and paper making industry. The inauguration ceremony took place in Wuxi on September 9, 2001, and was attended by 250 honorary guests.

The center’s construction started in summer 2000, and was completed one year later. During the construction period, the company was run from a temporary office, offering a limited scope of spare parts and process improvement services. The opening of the new service center significantly extended the scope of the company's services. The center features, among others, a fully equipped one-stop roll service shop that provides polyurethane and rubber roll covers as well as mechanical roll maintenance for all roll types. In addition, the center operates a consumables base, allowing quick delivery of critical spare parts and tailored consumables such as doctor blades. Today, the company employs appr. 60 persons.

Though the center is primarily intended to provide extensive back-up for Metso Paper's existing installations in China, its services are also available for other makes of fiber and papermaking machinery, including panelboard lines. Metso Paper's first deliveries to China date back to the late 1950's. During the years, China has emerged as one of Metso Paper's key market areas. Therefore, this major strengthening of local service operations is a vital part of Metso Paper's full commitment to and support of the development of the Chinese pulp and paper industry.
