Valmet BFB Boiler for agro-residues

We are proud to introduce the Valmet BFB Boiler designed for 100% agro-residue fuels, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Our innovative BFB boiler concept is the result of extensive R&D efforts, enabling the use of high-alkaline fuels such as straw pellets, sunflower husk, fruit stones, nut shells, empty fruit bunch, or various processed agro-derived residues from food or vegetable oil industry—materials traditionally considered unsuitable for BFB combustion. 

Piloted at Valmet’s Energy R&D Center, this groundbreaking technology overcomes the main challenges of fluidized bed technology when using high-alkaline fuels. The advanced combustion principles developed by Valmet effectively prevent bed agglomeration, a common issue that can now be avoided. Additionally, our patented two-zone combustion furnace arrangement addresses the risk of heavy furnace fouling, ensuring the bed remains fluidized without disruption. 

Fuel flexibility is one of the big benefits of a BFB boiler and now it can be extended for a wider fuel portfolio than ever before. Seasonal variations in fuel quantities or quality can all be tackled with the fluidized bed technology and fit for purpose boiler design.  

The new BFB concept isn’t limited to new boilers; it also offers the possibility of rebuilding existing ones. This flexibility allows utilizing a significant part of an existing plant’s technology, requiring only changes to the furnace structure. Whether it’s a new BFB boiler or a rebuild of an existing boiler, our solution ensures efficient energy production while contributing to sustainability.
